Christmas Story
The Christmas Story (Summary from the Bible)
The Christmas story, as told in the Bible, comes primarily from the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. It recounts the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ, the Savior, and celebrates God’s gift to humanity.
1. The Announcement of Jesus’ Birth
- Luke 1:26-38: The angel Gabriel visits Mary, a young virgin in Nazareth, and announces that she will conceive a son through the Holy Spirit. Mary is to name Him Jesus, and He will be called the Son of God. Despite her initial fear, Mary humbly accepts God’s plan, saying, “I am the Lord’s servant.”
- Matthew 1:18-24: Joseph, Mary’s fiancé, discovers she is pregnant and considers ending their engagement quietly. However, an angel appears to him in a dream, explaining that Mary’s child is from the Holy Spirit and will save His people from their sins. Joseph obeys and takes Mary as his wife.
2. The Journey to Bethlehem
- Luke 2:1-5: A decree from Caesar Augustus requires everyone to return to their ancestral towns for a census. Mary and Joseph travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem, the City of David, as Joseph is from the house of David.
3. The Birth of Jesus
- Luke 2:6-7: While in Bethlehem, Mary gives birth to Jesus. Due to a lack of space in the inn, she places Him in a manger, symbolizing His humble arrival.
4. The Announcement to the Shepherds
- Luke 2:8-20: In the fields near Bethlehem, an angel appears to shepherds, announcing the birth of the Savior. The angel proclaims, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” The shepherds go to Bethlehem, find Jesus in the manger, and spread the news, glorifying God for what they have seen.
5. The Visit of the Wise Men
- Matthew 2:1-12: Wise men (Magi) from the East follow a star to Jerusalem, seeking the newborn King of the Jews. King Herod, feeling threatened, sends them to Bethlehem to find the child. The Magi present gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to Jesus, symbolizing His kingship, divinity, and future suffering. Warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they leave by another route.
6. Escape to Egypt
- Matthew 2:13-15: An angel warns Joseph in a dream that Herod plans to kill the child. Joseph takes Mary and Jesus to Egypt for safety until Herod’s death.
7. The Return to Nazareth
- Matthew 2:19-23: After Herod’s death, an angel tells Joseph it is safe to return. The family settles in Nazareth, fulfilling the prophecy that Jesus would be called a Nazarene.
Significance of the Christmas Story
The Christmas story reminds us of:
- God’s Love: Jesus’ birth is the fulfillment of God’s promise to send a Savior.
- Humility and Hope: Jesus, born in humble circumstances, brings hope to all, from shepherds to kings.
- Faith and Obedience: Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, and the wise men demonstrate trust and obedience to God’s plan.
The story celebrates the birth of Jesus, who is Emmanuel—“God with us” (Matthew 1:23)—bringing peace and salvation to the world.
